Some Apple users have been unable to produce or access backups from iCloud for more than 36 hours

It now has been more than a day and a half since a service outage has prevented some Apple users from accessing data backed up in iCloud. At the same time, new backups cannot be created due to this problem. Apple's system status website shows that iCloud has been down since 8am PDT on Tuesday. While Apple has not passed along any particular reason for the problem, the company is no doubt working on a fix that will allow users to resume using the iCloud service.

If there is a silver lining in the iCloud so to speak, it is that less than 1% of Apple users are affected. But for those who ...

If you're a daily Phone Arena reader, you know that this is called Edge Sense. Today, HTC released a video that shows how easy it is to set up Edge Sense. First, you need to select the "squeeze force level," which is the amount of squeezing that is required to set off the feature. HTC recommends that you squeeze as hard as you can when setting this level. After all, setting this too low will result in many accidental ...

There's nothing wrong with pulling a major update if there are issues that must be addressed, but we can't help but wonder why it took Sony two weeks to reach the conclusion that the rollout must be put on hold temporarily. You can read Sony's full statement below:

It's certain that in a few months' time the vast majority of contemporary iPhones and iPads worldwide will be running iOS 11, the next major software update that will be hitting Apple devices. Announced just two days ago during the opening keynote of WWDC 2017, it's revamping a few core OS elements with the hopes of improving the user experience while also clearly showing that Apple is ready to further open iOS to developers and users. Things like a file manager, a customizable Control Center, and native easy-to-use screen recording were unthinkable features for iOS ...

Samsung Galaxy S8 launcher update promises to fix the lag, doesn't

It's fair to say Samsung isn't exactly well known for its great software: its smartphones are often accused of being plagued by performance problems, even when equipped with the most high-end hardware. Its current flagship, the Galaxy S8, was no exception to this: users were often left disappointed with the device's performance, which can be prone to stuttering. A new update for the device's stock launcher, however, aims to remedy this problem: on the home screen, at least.

The fix itself is for a pretty specific problem: the lag which presents itself when ...

Would you give $170 for a 3D-printed iPhone 8 mockup?

The Chinese mockup industry has been churning plastic dummies of upcoming iPhones for as long as the handset has been popular, but with the 10th anniversary iPhone 8 nearing its unveiling, the game has been brought up to a whole new level now.

Besides the usual dummies based on rumors and leaked specs, some of which you can see above, below is an elaborate 3D-printed model made by a graphics aficionado who has had some success this year with accurately depicting the Galaxy S8 based on leaked schematics.

    He is selling ...

Honor 9 US premiere "not planned at this moment"

It looks like the slightly belated European announcement event for the Honor 9 won't have a US counterpart. Speaking to Android Central, Eva Wimmers, VP of Honor EU/Global stated that the company currently has no plans for launching the powerful mid-ranger in the States.

This is quite a drastic change of strategies for the Huawei-owned manufacturer. Some of you might remember that Honor 8, a device that precedes the current model, had a quite flashy announcement event in San Francisco in August of 2016 and was available for ...

Qualcomm's new Snapdragon 450 chip provides good battery life on a budget

Qualcomm today has unveiled the Snapdragon 450 chipset. With the reception given smartphones like the BlackBerry KEYone and the Moto Z Play, both of which used the Snapdragon 625 SoC to help provide outstanding battery life, the new chip offers extremely efficient energy usage. In fact, the Snapdragon 450 is built using the same 14nm process as the Snapdragon 625 and recently announced 630 chipsets. That compares to the 28nm process that the Snapdragon 435 uses, and gives devices powered by the Snapdragon 450 chip four additional hours of battery life.

A true octa-core CPU is found inside ...

Sony to preview 3D face recognition this week?

For face recognition to be good enough to confirm someone's identity, it has to use 3D representation. The 2D images that are part of the native Face Unlock feature on Android is not enough to make you feel comfortable about using it to verify identity for financial transactions. But this week, at MWC Shanghai, Sony will display a 3D face recognition system that can be used for biometric readings.

While such 3D scanning will be be used in Augmented Reality, it can also be used for security purposes. That is what Sony has in mind. The company is partnering with Swiss facial recognition firm ...
